Plastics injection mold design calculate cavity quantity

January 20, 2019 by mechanicaleng blog 4 Comments

Have you ever been worried when calculate cavity quantity of injection mold design? Do you want to know how many cavities are suitable for your machine? I think you don’t want to use 250 tone machine for production small items, it is very to waste your money. How to calculate the cavities number of injection mold is quite important to decide which kind of mold you want.
The cavity number of mold is the first request you must be care when design an injection mold. Because after decide the cavity number, you will design gate, runner, dimension of mold, ejector system,…follow cavity number.

We can calculate the cavity number by:

  • II. Calculate follow clamping force of injection molding machine.
  • I. Calculate follow velocity of injection molding machine.

I. Injection mold design cavity calculation follow shot size of injection molding machine.

The shot size of injection molding machine is the maximum melt volume the available injection molding machine can deliver in one shot. If the maximum shot size of the machine is already in use, we can not increase the number of cavities in the mold.
We can calculate by a formula:
N=(0.8Vmax)/Vp
Vmax: Shot size of injection molding machine;
Vp : Volume of single product and gate, runner, sprue.

II. Calculate follow clamping force of injection molding machine.

To understand clamping force, you can see clamping force of injection molding machine
N = SP/F
F: Maximum clamping force of injection molding machine (N).
P: Max inject pressure of injection molding machine(MPA)
A: Projected area(mm 2).

I. Calculate follow velocity of injection molding machine.

N= v/nV
N: number of cavity.
v: Velocity of melt plastic.
n: injects number/60s
V: Volume of product+ gate + runner + sprue (mm 3)
